Hot Chocolate!

You have to love a race that has chocolate waiting for you at the finish line.  My friend, Kristy, called me about a month before this race asking if I had registered and saying that she wanted to do it and that it would be her first 5K.  Well heck yeah, my response was “I’m IN!”  We headed off to Big D at the butt crack of dawn to get ourselves parked and ready (you don’t want to run late to a race that has 12,000 runners registered!), found our way to our corrals, and that chilly morning my friend completed her very first 5K, I PR’ed mine, and we enjoyed our reward of hot chocolate and fondue. In her car. Because we were freezing.  Ha!  We did, despite the cold, manage to get before and after pics.

Kristy has since completed her 2nd 5K (why didn’t I get a picture of us?!?!) and I have a feeling there will be many more.  SO proud of you, girl, I’ll “sparkle” with you again any time!!  :)

Miracle Match Half

This post could easily also be titled “Holy Hills, Batman!” This was our first trip to Waco for the Miracle Match Marathon, and let me tell ya, they don’t call it the “toughest in Texas” for no reason. The first 10K or so? No problem, nice and flat, and we even got to take a little jaunt through Cameron Park Zoo. After that, ummmmm, ouch
Here are a couple of visual aids I prepared to help describe the race:

elevation map borrowed from the Miracle Match Marathon Site.

So, yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I ran my 2nd fastest half time and was pretty happy with that given that hills are a particular weakness of mine. Apparently going downhill isn’t exactly my strength either, as my knees were protesting my “brake the whole way to keep yourself from going out of control and finishing covered in road rash” method. This race was very well-organized and nicely run and we will definitely be back next year to take another beating from those hills. Derek says he wants to do the full (which we hear is extremely tough with very large hills coming again around the 20-mile mark), but I’m thinking I’ll stick with the half. For now at least.

Once again, I had a great time getting to hang with my main squeeze and partner in pain. Who knew we’d become a couple whose idea of a “weekend away” is a Saturday night carb loading session complete with a Blue Moon or two and then a Sunday morning half, full, ultra, etc? Not me!  But it sure is fun, and honestly, getting to be together, and of course the beer and bling, are totally worth the pain. 😉

Monday the Doodle and I did some exploring in the woods near our house.  It was so much fun he barely noticed it was actually his birthday photo shoot.  He picked the outfit, top to bottom and I just followed along where ever he wanted to wander.  Of course, I was being bossed a bit along the way, “Don’t take a picture here, Mom, there’s too much sun.”  Photographer’s kid, much? I may or may not have taken a few too many pictures, so excuse the ridiculous number I’m posting here.

Last night, which was his actual birthday, he requested pizza for dinner and had a big sugar cookie with his candles on it. (we’ll do cake this weekend at his party) As you can see, he wasn’t the least bit excited that it was his birthday. 😉 I’m not sure how the last 7 years have managed to pass so quickly, but it sure has been a fun ride with this big guy. He’s definitely the best surprise I’ve ever received. Happy Birthday Doodle, we love you to the moon and back!

Jiggle Butt 5K

My first race of the year was the Jiggle Butt 5K in Arlington. It was awesome to see so many women together in one place getting their fitness on for the new year. I will definitely be doing this one again and hope we can put together a big team for next year.
